Political Signs – Let the fun begin

You may have already noticed. The campaign signs in Alexandria have been sprouting like spring flowers. Along with the signs controversy concerning them has already started.

One political operative supporting Rand Paul has accused a candidate for fiscal court of moving a Rand Paul sign so that his sign could be in that exact location. The Rand supporter claims that he had permission to place the Paul sign at that spot and that the fiscal court candidate moved it so that he could place his sign there.

The truth of the matter is that the property owner, although giving permission to erect a Rand sign on his property, asked the Rand supporter to not place it on that exact spot because he was reserving it to allow the fiscal court candidate to eventually place his sign there.

After the property owner allowed the Rand sign to be moved to another spot on the property the Rand supporter showed up and chewed out the property owner for having the gall to assign the various spots for signs on his property how he wished.

Most property owners would have sent the Rand supporter and his sign hiking but the property owner is more gracious than most.

In another controversy it seems that the city has a beef with a candidate for county office over their sign. The city has sent a letter to the candidate explaining the city’s regulations concerning political signs. There doesn’t seem to be much difference in the size and placement of this sign then some of the others already erected in the city. Does the city have a beef with this particular candidate? If there is a problem with the sign let’s see if the city applies the same standards to all other similar campaign signs in the city. The city doesn’t have a good track record of equal enforcement of its sign regulations. From time-to-time the city ignores them altogether, on a case-by-case basis of course.
