Budget Lessons

After seeing that Alexandria spent $16,000 for someone to do a street study and tell them what city streets need the most at

tention and after paying a firm somewhere in the neighborhood of $700 to sweep the gutters along U.S. 27 (maintenance of which is the state’s responsibility) we see that Alexandria is going to have a tight budget this year.

We don’t know what else the city is spending or how they’re doing financially in the operation of the Community Center since this information doesn’t seem to be any more available than it was in the last administration.

We have a feeling that the budget is going to be a lot tighter than anyone is letting on.

Maybe the city needs to contact our neighbor to the north, Cold Spring, for some tips and advice.

Cold Spring sees $50K in surplus

COLD SPRING - Expense control helped the city of Cold Spring cut costs in its proposed new budget, creating a surplus of roughly $50,000.

The city projected revenues in its 2011-12 fiscal budget of $3.4 million, and $3.35 million in expenses and total appropriations.

The city of Cold Spring had the first reading of the drafted budget Monday night.

Mayor Mark Stoeber attributed the surplus to good cost control across all of the city's departments. He said the city, for instance, changed how it financed the plan that provides health insurance to its 20 full-time employees.

He said payroll taxes for the upcoming budget were about $100,000 more than expected.

"Even though we budget conservatively, the city's revenues for the proposed fiscal year are better than we expected," Stoeber said. "The city of Cold Spring has survived the recession remarkably well."

Stoeber said the city plans to spend about $500,000 to resurface three streets.

He said the city also plans to spend about $100,000 to purchase two new police cruisers and a dump truck.

Council will vote on the proposed budget June 13.
